✅ Ages 6 to 19: $10
✅ With OCT Retinal Imaging: $35
What is OCT Retinal Imaging?
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is an advanced imaging technology that captures high-resolution, cross-sectional images of the retina.
What is Myopia? What Are the Risk Factors?
Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a condition where distant objects appear blurry while close-up vision remains clear. The prevalence of myopia is rising, largely due to increased screen time and prolonged near-work activities such as reading.
Understanding myopia and its connection to axial length can help in early detection and management. Learn more about the risk factors and why it's important to have your child’s vision checked
Why Annual Eye Exams Matter
Many children have undiagnosed vision problems that can affect their ability to read, learn, and focus. With increased screen time and digital device use, regular eye exams help ensure your child isn’t struggling with their vision.

20/20 Vision is NOT Everything!
Your child's first eye exam should occur before they are one year of age. No, this is not a typo! Getting your child's vision checked while they are an infant is important to make sure their eyes develop properly.
If your child has an eye infection, bring them in to see our doctors. Our Doctors of Optometry can prescribe medications for eye
infections and can usually see children the same day.
Varsity Optical is proud to be a part of Eye See Eye Learn This is a program that provides a free pair of glasses to children in kindergarten. Contact us for more details!
Optical Coherence Tomography Imaging (OCT)
What is OCT?
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a cutting-edge imaging technology that helps us see the intricate structures inside the eye. Similar to an ultrasound, which uses sound waves, OCT uses light waves to capture high-resolution, detailed images of the retina and optic nerve located at the back of the eye.
How Does OCT Work?
Using a scanning laser, OCT examines the different layers of the retina and optic nerve for any early signs of eye disease. Think of it like a specialized CT scan designed just for the eyes—but without any radiation. This makes OCT a safe and painless procedure, perfect for children. The entire scan only takes a few seconds, offering a quick yet powerful tool in safeguarding your child’s vision.
Why is OCT Important for Your Child?
Early detection is key in preventing and treating eye diseases. OCT allows us to monitor even the tiniest changes in your child’s eye health over time. With these precise, color-coded images, we can catch problems early—often before any symptoms appear—ensuring your child receives the best care possible.
Conditions OCT Can Help Detect
-
Lazy Eye (Amblyopia)
-
Pediatric Glaucoma
-
Retinal Conditions
-
Optic Nerve Anomalies
A Stress-Free Experience
One of the best parts about OCT is how child-friendly it is. There’s no need for dilation drops or uncomfortable procedures. Your child simply looks at a target while the machine does the rest—quietly and quickly.
Covered by Insurance
Many insurance plans cover comprehensive eye exams for children, including OCT imaging. Regular screenings can be a valuable part of your child’s annual health check-up.

Axial Length Measurement / Myopia Progression
What Is Axial Length Imaging?
Axial length imaging measures the length (biometry) of the eyeball from front to back. This measurement is critical because excessive eye growth is a key factor in progressive myopia, which can increase the risk of serious eye conditions later in life, such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.
Why Is It Important for Your Child?
-
Detects Myopia Early – Regular eye exams check how well your child can see, but they don’t measure how their eye is growing. Axial length imaging helps us catch changes before they affect vision.
-
Helps Slow Myopia Progression – If your child is nearsighted, tracking axial length helps us see if treatments like special glasses, contact lenses, or eye drops are working.
-
Protects Their Future Eye Health – The earlier we detect eye growth changes, the better we can manage them to reduce risks of serious vision problems later in life.
How the Test Works
The test is quick, painless, and non-invasive. It simply uses light to measure the eye’s length, without any discomfort or exposure to radiation.
When Should Your Child Get This Test?
If your child is nearsighted or has a family history of myopia, we strongly recommend yearly axial length imaging as part of their eye exam. Even if their vision seems stable, this test helps detect silent changes that may require early intervention.
By including axial length imaging in your child’s eye exams, we can take a proactive approach to protecting their vision for the future. Early detection and management can make all the difference in keeping their eyes healthy for life!
Cost and Insurance coverage
Cost for Axial length measurement is $50. Many private insurances cover eye exam for children and may also cover the cost of an eye exam with axial length measurement
