OCT Retinal Imaging for Seniors: An Essential Part of Your Annual Eye Exam

What is OCT Retinal Imaging?

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging test that uses light waves to capture detailed cross-sectional images of the retina. This advanced technology helps detect and monitor eye diseases that can impact vision.

Why Should Seniors Get OCT Retinal Imaging Annually?

As we age, the risk of eye diseases significantly increases. OCT imaging helps detect conditions early, often before symptoms appear.;

Key Benefits of OCT Imaging:

✅ Early Detection of Eye Diseases

  • Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD): Identifies early signs of AMD, a leading cause of vision loss in seniors.

  • Glaucoma: Measures the thickness of optic nerve fibers to detect glaucoma before significant vision loss occurs.

  • Diabetic Retinopathy: Helps identify early retinal damage in individuals with diabetes.

✅ Ongoing Monitoring of Eye Health
If you already have an eye condition, OCT imaging helps track disease progression and assess treatment effectiveness.

✅ Quick, Painless, and Non-Invasive

  • The test takes only a few minutes and requires no direct contact with the eye.

✅ Prevention of Vision Loss
Many eye diseases develop without noticeable symptoms in their early stages. Regular OCT scans allow for early intervention, helping preserve vision.

Take Charge of Your Eye Health

Including OCT imaging in your annual comprehensive eye exam is a proactive step toward maintaining clear vision and quality of life for years to come.

Insurance Coverage for Seniors – Comprehensive Eye Exams

Many insurance companies, including Sun Life, Canada Life, Manulife, and Green Shield, cover comprehensive eye exams for seniors. Unfortunately, Alberta Blue Cross does not cover senior eye exams, as it has yet to update its coverage to align with the recent changes Alberta Health made to seniors eye exam coverage.

The primary source of income for seniors (65 years of age or older) is provided by the Government of Canada through the Guaranteed Income Supplement and Old Age Security.

To supplement these programs, the Government of Alberta offers optical and dental assistance for seniors based on income levels. For more details on coverage and income eligibility, please refer to the attachment below.

Reminder: When you turn 65, you must sign up for the senior benefits program, as enrollment is not automatic.
